Spaceman Gearboxes

Parts and Accessories :: Spaceman Gearboxes

Spaceman soft serve and frozen beverage machines use a belt-drive system where a motor is connected via a belt and pulleys to a gearbox that turns the auger in the freezing cylinder to agitate the product.  These gearboxes are specifically chosen for each machine to turn the auger at a specific speed and provide adequate torque for the motor to turn the frozen product.   In this way, the gearbox is very similar to the transmission in your car.  It is important that your gearbox is always functioning correctly. Over several years, Spaceman has made improvements to reduce the wear-and-tear that the gearboxes experience, as well as make this part as robust as possible.  This article will go over all the different gearboxes Spaceman sells, and information on selecting the correct gearbox for your model.

For information on how to replace your gearbox, please see one of the following articles:

 Spaceman Gearboxes and Mounting Bracket

Spaceman has three types of gearboxes.  Within each type is multiple sizes depending on model size:

  1. Frozen Beverage - Standard
  2. Soft Serve - Standard
  3. Soft Serve – Air Pump (Includes longer drive shaft for belt-driven air pump clutch)

Gearboxes are differentiated based on how many turns the gear box makes for every rotation of the motor.  Most Spaceman gearboxes are between a 1:4 and a 1:7 ratio.  Gearboxes are further sized by their output shaft diameter (16mm or 20mm) and their mounting hole spacing (79mm or 89mm)

Spaceman mounting brackets are all similar in function but are sized to fit each model based on the size of the cylinder the machine has.  Each mounting bracket will have two sizes: Cylinder size (1.3-1.8qt, 3.2qt, 4.0-7.0qt) and mounting hole spacing (79mm or 89mm).

Alert: When you replace your gearbox, Spaceman highly recommends always replacing the coupling drive at the same time.
Update: 06/21/2022
To further diversify our supply chain and prevent inventory disruptions, Spaceman has updated its gearbox to allow for two interchangeable gearboxes that may be installed on the equipment.  In the below charts is the default standard gearbox that all models should be updated to.  At the very bottom of this article is an optional direct replacement gearbox part number that can be used interchangeably with the standard gearbox.  Both gearboxes utilize identical mounting positions, have identical size and shape, and are forward and backwards compatible with each other.

Selecting the Correct Gearbox

Soft Serve Models, 1.3-1.8qt Cylinder Size with Serial Number Lower than 181165
Models: SM-6210, SM-6220, SM-6228, SM-6235, SM-6250, SM-6245, SM-6248

Soft serve small-barrel machines with a serial number lower than 181165 have a gearbox with a 16mm output shaft and a 79mm mounting hole spacing standard.  These gearboxes have all been obsoleted and must be replaced with the appropriate larger sized gearbox.  This will require you to also replace the coupling drive and mounting bracket to accommodate the larger gear box.

Original 1.3-1.8qt Cylinder Size with Serial Number Lower than 181165 gearboxes:

Replace these gearboxes with:

Soft Serve Models, 1.3-1.8qt Cylinder Size, with a Serial Number Between 181165 and 190180
Models: SM-6210, SM-6220, SM-6228, SM-6235, SM-6250, SM-6245, SM-6248

Soft serve small-barrel models with a serial number from 181165 to 190180 have a gearbox with a 20mm output shaft and a 79mm mounting hole spacing.  These gearboxes are no longer in production, but inventory is still available.  You may be able to purchase the exact replacement gearbox for your model, or you may also purchase the newer gearbox, however this will require you to also replace the mounting bracket to accommodate the larger gear box.

Original 1.3-1.8qt Cylinder Size, with a Serial Number Between 181165 and 190180 gearboxes:

Replace these gearboxes with:

Soft Serve Models, 1.3-1.8qt Cylinder Size, with a Serial Number greater than 190180
Models: SM-6210, SM-6220, SM-6228, SM-6235, SM-6250, SM-6245, SM-6248

Models with a serial number greater than 190180 have the latest gearbox at the largest size.

Replace these gearboxes and parts with (mounting bracket optional):

Soft Serve Models, 3.2qt Cylinder Size, with a Serial Number lower than 181240
Models: SM-6236, SM-6338, SM-6260, SM-6378

Soft serve large-barrel models with a serial number lower than 181240 have a gearbox with a 16mm output shaft and either a 79mm or 89mm mounting hole spacing.  These gearboxes are obsolete.  You need to purchase the newer gearbox, and depending on model, you may also be required to also replace the mounting bracket to accommodate the larger gear box.

Original 3.2qt Cylinder Size with a Serial number lower than 181240 gearboxes:

Replace these gearboxes with:

Soft Serve Models, 3.2qt Cylinder Size, with a Serial Number greater than 181240
Models: SM-6236, SM-6338, SM-6260, SM-6378

Models with a serial number greater than 190180 have the latest gearbox at the largest size.

Replace these gearboxes with:

Frozen Beverage Models, all Cylinder Size, with a Serial Number less than 181259
Models: SM-6450, SM-6455, SM-6490, SM-6650, SM-6690, SM-6695, SM-6795

Frozen beverage models with a serial number lower than 181259 have a gearbox with a 16mm output shaft and either a 79mm mounting hole spacing.  These gearboxes are obsolete.  You need to purchase the newer gearbox and coupling drive that are 20mm.

Original Frozen Beverage Models with a Serial Number less than 181259 Gearbox:

Replace these gearboxes with:

Frozen Beverage Models, all Cylinder Size, with a Serial Number greater than 181258
Models: SM-6450, SM-6455, SM-6490, SM-6650, SM-6690, SM-6695, SM-6795

Models with a serial number greater than 181258 have the latest gearbox at the largest size.

Replace these gearboxes with:

The above part numbers are the default gearbox used in all Spaceman equipment.  Starting in July 2022, Spaceman began producing a secondary backup gearbox to ensure supply chain stability.  If the above gearbox part number is out of stock or unavailable, please see the below chart for the alternative gearbox as a direct replacement.  Both gearboxes are built to the same high level of safety and mechanical standards and are used interchangeably on the machines.
